The Intelligent Transport System Technical Committee (ITS TC) is a Technical Committee of the Information Technology Standards Committee (ITSC) that is supported by SPRING Singapore and the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore. The ITS TC was appointed as a full technical committee by ITSC on 28 September 2006, after about one year of preparations as a Protem Committee.
Key members of the ITS TC are also council or corporate members of the Intelligent Transportation Society (Singapore), a non-profit society for professionals who have avid interests in the use of technologies in the field of transportation.
Before the appointment of the ITS TC, there were no known attempts to formulate a national standard in the area of ITS in Singapore. However, there were prominent developments in the Intelligent Transport Sector in Singapore, mostly spearheaded by the local transport authority. With increasing applications of information technologies in ITS, there is an apparent need for standardization so that systems are interoperable in the long run.
In other words, these would imply the need for interoperability among systems to create the required knowledge base. However, without an accepted standard to follow and to support the integration, it is highly probable that systems will be built on proprietary technologies, viz., map databases, database formats, data communication protocols, information processing platforms, and etc. Eventually, it can be difficult and costly to migrate and upgrade the systems. Furthermore, it could limit the potential to export good solutions and know-hows implemented in Singapore in overseas markets.
